Re: How do we approach a new proposition?

Hi again Moonwood and 0g3 both. I’m going to pool my responses to both of you since you’re both arguing along similar lines. The heart of the evidential problem is that there is an inherent contradiction between the existence of gratuitous evil and the existence of an omnibenevolent God. You guys r...

Re: C.S. Lewis - Mere Christianity

SEG. I think weare going round in circles here as we so often do. I find it very time consuming to explain things at length and even when I do this does not go anywhere. We have spent a lot of time arguing you and I and I often feel you are not listening or hare off at tangents. Maybe that is a misp...

Re: C.S. Lewis - Mere Christianity

Point taken. But if you set my indiscretion aside, you are still left with Lewis hiding other Christian points of conflict away to advance his cause. I don't think that is what he is doing. The conflicts between denominations are not hidden, but what Lewis is saying is that he does not think discus...

Re: How do we approach a new proposition?

It seems to me that your position is much more subtle than SEG's. As far as I can tells SEG's view is that in a properly ordered cosmos no one should be suffering even the mildest discomfort. You will allow that some pain and discomfort may have a purpose and hence not be gratuitous but I am not su...

Re: C.S. Lewis - Mere Christianity

But he never explains why the atheist world view on why there doesn't need to be a supernatural lawgiver is wrong. There is not one single atheist world view on ethics. In 1924 A N Wilson tells us Lewis was thinking of applying for a philosophy chair at Oxford and was going to offer a dissertation ...

Re: How do we approach a new proposition?

If SEG is saying that then he's probably arguing the logical problem of evil. I agree the logical argument overstates the problem evil poses for a (supposedly) omnibenevolent deity. I'm inclined to accept that Christian philosophers have largely answered the logical problem, but they have not solve...

Re: C.S. Lewis - Mere Christianity

The point has already been made that Lewis was deceptive in deliberately withholding crucial contradictory information to neophytes in order not to muddy them with dirt. That's clear deception on the part of the author and is separate from anything that I may or may not have disclosed. And it leave...

Re: C.S. Lewis - Mere Christianity

That's well admitted but the argument you copied is not solid and it can now be shown that you do not really agree with it. Of course I agree with it, but we have moved on from there. If you agree with it then it thoroughly condems you. You pretended to be concerned with honesty so as to have a sti...

Re: C.S. Lewis - Mere Christianity

Wow. I would have expected the atheists to be a bit more original in their justifications. Don't lump me in with the other atheists, what I did was my fault alone. I went a bit overboard and yeah it was plagiarised. I did read it though and the arguments against Lewis are solid. That's well admitte...

Re: How do we approach a new proposition?

But Og, life isn't all about logic. I think you also need to address the very important issue of the heart, in a very real and vital sense, of that argument. Personally, I think these two guys are not bringing up this argument in a flippant manner, merely to discuss the logical argument side of thi...
