Re: Why Faith Isn't a Reliable Pathway to Determine the Truth

Ok, cool. So whence cometh original sin if it is a sophisticated literary construct with mythic roots and preserved mythic elements? The doctrine of original sin was developed by Augustine of Hippo in the fourth century CE. there are many different versions of the doctrine and not all follow August...

Re: God, a Nothing Special Author

Is a moderate what we would call a centrist? Because here in the UK the issue is that over the last 30 to 40 years the ground in politics has shifted so far to the right that what is called centrism is what would once have been seen as a quite hard right position. I know you were reading up on neol...

Re: God, a Nothing Special Author

I think Harris and C Hitchens did represent a swing to the right. In some ways Hitchens C parallels the journey of his bro who was also once a liberal leftie. I have noticed you can be quite right wing and wonder if there is an influence of this aspect of the NA movement on you. Me? Right wing? Har...

Re: God and Abraham Exchange Lies and Mentally Abuse Isaac

You missed Chapabel explaining why he would not sacrifice his child and instead read him as saying he would. He was saying if per impossible he had been in Abraham's position whilst somehow still being himself (your hypothetical) he would have hoped to have had the same faith. You read that as him ...

Re: God and Abraham Exchange Lies and Mentally Abuse Isaac

Why? Because it will help you to understand what people are saying to you. What have I missed? You missed Chapabel explaining why he would not sacrifice his child and instead read him as saying he would. He was saying if per impossible he had been in Abraham's position whilst somehow still being hi...

Re: God, a Nothing Special Author

I thought Hitch showed remarkable restraint, especially against the litany of bad arguments thrown against him as insults. I've seen him just as insulting mind you, but this is the rudest Christian opponent I've ever seen against him. Interesting article here on new atheists https://www.theguardian...

Re: God and Abraham Exchange Lies and Mentally Abuse Isaac

So if you thought that God had commanded you to deceive your son (IOW lie) about going somewhere to do something else, then grab him, bind him up, then knife him and burn him you would do it without question. This means that if you get these thoughts into your head, you would actually carry out the...

Re: God and Abraham Exchange Lies and Mentally Abuse Isaac

I know you have become interested in Christian existentialism (unless you are referencing books without being aware of their content and context) so would it be interesting to explore Kierkegaard's views on this? No not atm thanks, I am tied up with books by Paul Tillich, Rudolf Bultmann, and Rollo...

Re: God, a Nothing Special Author

Good on you Moon! Yes I heard his debate with his Christian brother, it was very interesting. Did you want to say anything about it? Well I felt the guy here was completely partisan. He is trying to equate the liberal left and Stalin which is the right wing equivalent of people on the left calling ...
