Hey, rian! How are the kids?

I've kept up on the podcasts and discussions for the most part...but there are a couple of reasons I haven't posted in awhile:

1)I'm so familiar with most of the atheist/christian arguments by this point that I don't bother posting unless something really grabs me;

2) I got engaged a few months ago, had to start booking vendors while finishing my Masters degree and now I'm home with my parents with nothing to do except wedding-plan. So while I'm sitting here on my butt by the family computer printing wedding invitations 5 at a time, I surf over to good ol' "achristianandanatheist.com" and see what's up. :)

Hey, kids are good, thanks for asking! :)

Congrats on your engagement, and best wishes for a wonderful wedding! There will probably be a few kill-joys taking offense at some trivial point, but the main point to remember is that it's your wedding, and you will end up being married at the end of the day, despite any grumpy people! :)

Heehee! Well, my mom and her best friend have already tried to take over the reception, and when I made the case for assigned seating as opposed to free seating, I got criticized for wanting to be "too formal". I think it's an East Coast vs. West Coast thing. Their coup failed, mostly because we fell victim to Guest List Bloat and we had to switch venues. I win. What do you think about using fruit in the centerpieces?

(the wedding is at the end of July, btw.)

Made from sacred cows.

Using fruit as centrepieces sounds like a good idea to me; anything which is edible saves on waste.

I can see it now. The reception turns into a feeding frenzy: RRROOOOWR!!! ::CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP::

Or perhaps I misinterpreted your suggestion and you really meant for us to have platters of delicately arrayed sushi and sashimi at each table. I wonder which would be more expensive per table, the carefully prepared raw fish or a whole raw chicken? Do you recommend seasoning the chicken before presentation? Or did you have some other meat in mind, for example a side of beef?

Here's one possible suggestion:

Of course, this may be a bit too suggestive before a wedding night. That rack is reminiscent of a device found in a gynecologist's office.

Aaaack, the innuendo never stops...I meant she got a kick out of the idea of putting whole chickens on the table.

Aw, man, did it have to be THAT post that got me finally to 3-star "resident" status? I had been so looking forward to the day when I topped 100 posts...

Gratz on both counts! And nice to see you back, too.

Wow! Good for her! Some moms are a little uptight that way, you know ... :D

:D Well, at least you'll always remember your 100th post! :D

As far as the fruit - seriously, if it's a decorative centerpiece, people won't be sure whether or not they should eat it, and an expensive item might go to waste - unless you put a card along with it saying, "This centerpiece is for your eating enjoyment, as well as your viewing enjoyment - please go ahead and eat it!" or something like that (and even then, people might not do it). Another practical point is that sometimes fruit will get a little wilty and/or dry after a long spell sitting in fridges and then on tables. My opinion, for what it's worth, is to go with simple, inexpensive floral centerpieces (few flowers, lots of greenery), unless the fruit is less expensive. You can put some mints on the table if you think your guests might faint from hunger ;) and then provide whatever buffet food you can afford.
