Wisdom from Above

The sermon at church this past Sunday was on James 3: 13-18, Wisdom from Above. It is part of a continuing series on James. Verse 17 really stuck out for me as we were going through each verse. In particular, the mention of reason, since reason is so often mentioned here in this forum. Just wanted to share.... :D

“13Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”
‭‭James‬ ‭3:13-18‬ ‭ESV‬‬

I believe this goes right back to Adam and Eve with what the serpent was tempting them with. Real wisdom and understanding of good and evil come from time and experience in a relationship with God. But often people are tempted with the prestige and authority that comes with being a teacher of wisdom and so they put on a good show to get that. But the result is their wisdom is full of poison. The greatest worry is not how we will mislead others for surely God's will shall surpass our blundering. The greatest worry is in how our own words are likely to convict ourselves by the false standards of judgement we have constructed, which are in truth impossible to live up to because of our own ignorance.
