Here are the rules, y'all

Tired of wandering the lawless wilds of the AC&A forum? Have a friendly chat in our cozy, velvet-covered civility lounge. Alcohol not permitted, only the Kenny G button works on the jukebox. All undesirable types will be quietly escorted out the back door.

Here are the rules, y'all

Due to persistent popular demand, we now have a moderated area of the forum. Thanks to our volunteer pioneer moderators for getting this off the ground. Although they may be good looking and smell nice, but don't be fooled: keep it civil or they'll toss your ass out.

Where are the 'rules' - curious minds want to know
The "god experience"? I have no idea what you are talking about. This sounds like COMPLETE BULLSHIT that you are just making up. How do you define "god experience" in objective scientific terms?-Mitch - a Christian beyond compare.

** Moderator's Announcement **
***************************************

After a brief closure due to the absence of the founding member, Marcuspnw, we are now re-opening the Civility Lounge. Please feel free to come in, get yourself a virtual drink and a snack, settle back in our comfy chairs, and discuss things in this moderated area of our board.

As of now, our moderators are Marcuspnw, Rian and SpongeBob. Please feel free to contact us via PM with any of your concerns - we are here to help.
(update - Marcuspnw is currently away from the board, so please do not attempt to contact him.)

This is a new venture for A Christian & An Atheist. With the blessing of our able administrator and founder, Emery, we are providing this moderated section of the board for those that feel that discussions can be deeper and more fruitful with some enforced standards of discussion. What we wish to achieve is an atmosphere in line with the board motto : "Where differences and respect co-exist". Please be patient with us and work with us as we start up and develop this new area. The rest of the board will remain the same. With that in mind, here are our rules for the Civility Lounge:

1. Keep it friendly, please. We aren't here to win or to score off of others; we are here to speak openly and freely, and listen and learn from the others around us.

2. Remember that typed communication can be difficult, so we encourage reading over your post before hitting the "submit" button.

3. No insults, baiting, sweeping generalizations, or flaming. Sarcasm and passive-aggressive behavior will also be moderated within reason.

4. Please contact the moderators via PM or the "Report this post" button if you have concerns over someone's post - keep it off the public threads. Member discussion of moderator action on a public thread is not allowed. Discussion about moderator action will take place via PMs between a member and a moderator. Any PM specifically discussing moderator action may be placed on the moderator forum to enable moderator evaluation of the issue.

5. Please respect the moderators, who are volunteering their time in an effort to provide a service to the members, and comply with their guidance. Please feel free to contact moderators via PM at any time to discuss concerns - we are volunteering our time free of charge because we value discussion, as you do.

Moderation may consist of any or all of the following: a general public warning on a thread; locking a thread for a period of time for a cool-down period; a warning to specific members via PM for rule-breaking; and bans of varying lengths for members for consistent rule-breaking.

These guidelines may be updated as we see fit, and will be posted on the rule thread at the top of the forum.

Thank you very much, and we hope that this new area will be something that the members will enjoy!

(updated 3/13/14 for a clearer format and to make clear that member discussion of moderator actions is not allowed on public threads)

Our new moderator, tirtlegrrl, and I have been talking behind the scenes before the grand re-opening of the CL, and we have decided to add some updates to Da Rulz :-) so here is the complete updated rules and comments for the Civility Lounge :

After an almost year-long closure of the Civility Lounge (CL) due to cancer treatments for the Christian moderator, Rian, we are now re-opening. Please feel free to come in, get yourself a virtual drink and snack, settle back in our comfy chairs, and discuss things in a civilized manner in this moderated area of our board.

As of now, our moderators are Rian (Christian) and tirtlegrrl (atheist). Our previous atheist moderator, SpongeBob, had to resign due to conflicts in Real Life, and tirtlegrrl has graciously consented to step into his capable shoes (we miss SpongeBob, but are thrilled to have tirtlegrrl in his place!) Please feel free to contact us via PM with any of your concerns - we are here to help.

In the Civility Lounge, we have chosen to have moderators from both "sides" in order to maximize our ability to make fair and informed decisions. Moderators confer frequently behind the scenes over thread trends and do NOT "choose sides".

Please be patient with us and work with us as we develop this new area. 2. Remember that typed communication can be difficult, so we encourage reading over your post before hitting the "submit" button.

3. No insults, baiting, name-calling, sweeping generalizations, or flaming. Sarcasm and passive-aggressive behavior will also be moderated within reason (because you're not fooling us, ya know?!)

4. As it says in the main discussion area : Keep it real, minimal cutting and pasting please: we want to hear what YOU have to say!

5. Please contact the moderators via PM or the "Report this post" button if you have concerns over someone's post, instead of complaining on the public threads. This makes it a lot easier for everyone involved.

6. Member discussion of moderator action on a public thread is not allowed. However, general concerns and ideas about the CL may be (civilly) discussed on the Suggestion Box thread. Discussion about specific moderator actions will take place via PMs between a member and a moderator. Any PM specifically discussing moderator action may be placed on the moderator forum to enable moderator evaluation of the issue.

7. Please respect the moderators, who are volunteering their time in an effort to provide a service to the members, and comply with their guidance. Please feel free to contact moderators via PM at any time to discuss concerns - we are volunteering our time free of charge because we value discussion, as you do.

8. Profanity is discouraged in the CL, in order to preserve the tone of the discussion. Occasional mild swearing will be tolerated, but repeated and/or strong profanity (particularly the F-word) will be addressed and dealt with by the moderators at their discretion.

9. Moderation may consist of any or all of the following: a general public warning on a thread; locking a thread for a period of time for a cool-down period; a warning to specific members via PM for rule-breaking; and bans of varying lengths for members for consistent rule-breaking.

10. Moderators may choose to give general thread warnings using the "CL Moderator" persona to eliminate concerns over "which side" is giving the warning. The "CL Moderator" username is only used for giving thread warnings; do NOT attempt to contact the "CL Moderator" via PM because it might not ever be read. Moderators may be contacted via PM by using their username.

These guidelines may be updated as we see fit, and will be posted on the rule thread at the top of the forum.

Thank you very much, and we hope that this new area will be something that the members will enjoy!

10/1/2015 Edit - added "keep it real" rule.

** Moderator's Announcement **

9 November 2015: Rules update: after some input and discussion, we have updated the rules slightly. We have put in a rule about dogmatic pronouncements, and rearranged the other rules a bit for the sake of clarity. Please see below:

7 December 2015: Updates to Moderation Rules 3 and 4. Paragraphs added to clarify rules about bans, and to explain the difference between mods posting as members vs. mods posting as mods.

Due to requests from multiple members, our board administrator, Emery, has opened a moderated section of the board called the Civility Lounge, for those of us that feel that discussions can be deeper and more fruitful with some enforced standards of discussion. What we wish to achieve is an atmosphere in line with the board motto : "Where differences and respect co-exist". Please feel free to come in, get yourself a virtual drink, settle back in our comfy chairs, and discuss things in a civilized manner.

In the Civility Lounge, we have chosen to have moderators from both "sides" (Christian and atheist) in order to maximize our ability to make fair and informed decisions. As of now, our moderators are Rian (Christian) and tirtlegrrl (atheist). The moderators must be approved by Emery before being granted moderator status. Moderators confer frequently behind the scenes over thread trends before action is taken, and do NOT "choose sides". Please respect the moderators, who are volunteering their time in an effort to provide a service to the members, and comply with their guidance. Please feel free to contact moderators via PM at any time to discuss concerns - we are volunteering our time free of charge because we value discussion, as you do. All PMs about moderation questions will be shared in the Moderators' Forum to enable evaluation of the issue.

Rules for general discussion.

Please do:

1. Keep your tone friendly. We aren't here to win or to score off of others; we are here to speak openly and freely, and listen and learn from others around us. Remember that typed communication can be difficult, so we encourage reading over your post before hitting the "submit" button.

Please don't (2-5):

2. Give ultimatums. You might think your own opinions couldn't possibly be wrong, but stating those opinions in a harsh and/or dogmatic way kills conversation and will not be allowed. "My/my church's interpretation of the Bible is the only correct one!" or "people who believe in gods are delusional, period!" are examples of the kind of thing we will moderate.

3. Be a jerk. No insults, baiting, name-calling, sweeping generalizations, trolling, or flaming. Sarcasm and passive-aggressive behavior will also be moderated within reason (because you're not fooling us, ya know?!)

4. Swear like a sailor. Profanity is discouraged in the CL, in order to preserve the tone of the discussion. Occasional mild swearing will be tolerated, but repeated and/or strong profanity (particularly the F-word) will be addressed and dealt with by the moderators at their discretion.

5. Spam. Plagiarize. Or bore people with super long quotations. As it says in the main discussion area : Keep it real, minimal cutting and pasting please: we want to hear what YOU have to say!

This is how moderation works:

1. Contact the moderators via PM or the "Report this post" button if you have concerns over someone's post, instead of complaining on the public threads. This makes it a lot easier for everyone involved.

2. Member discussion of moderator action on a public thread is not allowed. However, general concerns and ideas about the Civility Lounge may be (civilly) discussed on the Suggestion Box thread. Discussion about specific moderator actions will take place via PMs between a member and a moderator.

3. Moderation may consist of any or all of the following: a general public warning or comment on a thread; locking a thread for a period of time for a cool-down period; a warning to specific members via a post or PM for rule-breaking; and bans of varying lengths for members for consistent rule-breaking.
If you receive a ban from the CL mods: Please stop posting in the CL right away, and don't post there again until your ban is over. It is your responsibility to not post in the CL during that period (the current board setup doesn't allow banning at the sub-forum level). However, if a banned member violates the terms of their ban and posts in the CL when they're not supposed to, the Board Administrator has authorized the mods to ban that person from the entire board for the rest of the ban period.

4. Moderators may choose to give general or specific thread warnings using the "CL Moderator" persona to eliminate concerns over "which side" is giving the warning (the concerns are baseless, though, because we confer and agree before giving a warning). The "CL Moderator" username is only used for giving thread warnings; do NOT attempt to contact the "CL Moderator" via PM because it might not ever be read. Moderators may be contacted via PM by using their username (Rian or tirtlegrrl). Moderators have the option to make normal, conversational posts in the CL, just like any other C&A member. If one of them has to post as a moderator, they will use the "CL Moderator" username, or put a banner at the top of the post, such as ***Moderator Announcement*** or ***Moderator Warning***, to make it clear that it is an official moderator post.

These guidelines may be updated as we see fit, and will be posted on the rule thread at the top of the forum.

Thank you very much, and we hope that this new area will be something that the members will enjoy!
