This is a reminder that we do not allow baiting in the CL. For example:

Simplyme wrote:I'm still waiting for one legit example of a church that teaches other religious beliefs and non-beliefs as an alternate and possible view?

Is this yet another claim that will never be confirmed?

Continued violations will result in further moderator action. As always, feel free to revisit the forum rules, and if you have any questions contact rian or tirtlegrrl via PM. Thank you!

Baiting??????? That's not baiting that was a legit question(I wonder which moderator is complaining???????).
I find it rather amusing, when thought of as ignorant or stupid(though I can be on many subjects). Especially by those who believe in a deity up in heaven watching our every move, and rewarding or punishing us after we have expired.

So I get reprimanded publicly but have to respond privately?

SimplyMe -

While the CL moderators were in complete agreement that your post was not in line with our rules, there was a mix-up about handling it due to our time-zone issues, and your name was mentioned in our "General Reminder" post when it should not have been mentioned. This is not how we typically do warnings, so since it was on a public thread, we want to publicly apologize to you.

If you have any further questions, you may PM tirtlegrrl or Rian, or you may make a post in our Suggestion Box thread if you wish to discuss our policies against baiting in general.

Again, we apologize for letting your name get into that post. That is not our usual policy for that type of issue.

Sincerely,
the CL Moderator team

Ok....consider me surprised.

I also apologize for being a dick about it.

This is a valid question since it was brought up as something that should be practiced at churches. I've never seen this in any church I've seen other than a Unitarian Church, but I've only ever attended churches in the deep South. It's possible there are churches elsewhere in the country that are more progressive this way.

Are you able to state this differently or expand a bit more by what you mean as an alternate and possible view?

Are you saying as historical/factual information regarding a religion or as a different choice of religion to join?

Different choice of religion or non-religion to join.

I see. Thank you for clarifying.
As a different choice of religion or non-religion to join, I doubt that would exist.

I don't know if this would count for Simplyme, but the Methodist church I went to in Tallahassee had all sorts of non-theist stuff in its library. "The God Delusion" was out there in plain view, no DANGER: POISON!!! stickers on it or anything. But this church was fairly liberal in a lot of ways; I'm sure they affirmed the creeds and stuff but they weren't fundamentalist and the group I was in knew I didn't believe and didn't seem bothered (nor did they ever try to push reconversion down my throat). If anything we were the church troublemakers; we'd meet up during Sunday School, watch the curricular materials, and then heavily criticize them.

Stacie Cook wrote:I did not attend them but from what I recall, it was a series for a certain amount of weeks like 6-8 I think. Each week a person (or persons) for a particular religion (Islam, Buddhist, Atheism, Taoism, etc) came in and shared an overview of their religion, any text they prescribed to, etc. If a certain text was involved, then the class members were to read portions of the text to get a general idea.
The idea was to get a better sense of other religions and viewpoints. Not classes as in 'which other religion do I want to be'...

Yes, the classes I mentioned were meant to help church attenders to understand and get a better idea of what other religions believe, ascribe to, etc. The classes were meant to be more so educational, not so much as a catalog of religions to choose to join or a different religion to ascribe to.

No problem. 8)

The CL mods apologize again for the mistake in handling the mod warning, and thank you for your patience and understanding! We also would like to emphasize that we always confer with each other before mod action is taken, and we don't act unless we are in agreement about issues that arise, because we are serious about preserving the CL forum as a civil and fair place for C&A members to converse.

Best regards,

The CL moderation team
