I think I understand your problem and there is an easy explanation. The comparison is probably by percentage. And the facts are that a much higher percentage of nonbelievers would have to go into politics in order for them to get adequate representation of their viewpoint. So even with a much smaller percentage of believers going in to politics they can still overwhelm the non-believers

Yes the source of your data is crucial, my explanation only works if it is done in a place where the believers are the majority. To check if my explanation works we can compare this to a similar study in a place where the unbelievers are not a minority.
