George Carlin was one of the good ones.
Time to listen to some old skits in memory.
He'll be missed

Never argue with a fool, onlookers may not be able to tell the difference

It’s better to keep your mouth shut and have people think you are a fool than to open it and remove any lingering doubt.

Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish.

Wise people think all they say; fools say all they think.

Let a fool hold his tongue and he will pass for a sage.

When you're arguing with a fool, make sure he isn't doing the same thing.

Diversity is the offspring of Liberty. Nonetheless, frightened, mainstream ideologues treat diversity like a bastard stepchild, instead of like a welcome indicator of our overall well-being.

the one that kept using intellectually invalid and factually erroneous points to further an argument that called for blatantly unconstitutional legislation based on an entirely subjective perspective with no testable or empirical evidence to back their assertions, all while maintaining a pronounced undercurrent of self-righteousness, sanctimony, and belittlement of some opposing assertions amidst a widespread and total lack of acknowledgment of the vast majority of assertions or facts directed at them.

I'll just stick to quotes for now, I guess. Why let another thread get trashed up?

Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind.
~*~ Shakespeare

We know what we are, but not what we may be.
~*~ Shakespeare

The whole problem can be stated quite simply by asking, 'Is there a meaning to music?' My answer would be, 'Yes.' And 'Can you state in so many words what the meaning is?' My answer to that would be, 'No.'
~*~ Aaron Copeland

After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.
~*~ Aldous Huxley

Opera is when a guy gets stabbed in the back and, instead of bleeding, he sings.
~*~ Ed Gardner

Wagner's music is better than it sounds.
~*~ Edgar Wilson Nye (1850 - 1896), quoted in Mark Twain's Autobiography, 1924

If there were no God, there would be no Atheists.
G. K. Chesterton

One of the advantages of being disorderly is that one is constantly making exciting discoveries.
~*~ A. A. Milne (1882 - 1956)

The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not 'Eureka!' (I found it!) but 'That's funny ...'
~*~ Isaac Asimov

America believes in education: the average professor earns more money in a year than a professional athlete earns in a whole week.
~*~ Evan Esar

College isn't the place to go for ideas.

A good quote's a good quote, and there are a lot of intelligent, perceptive atheists out there. I think they're wrong in some areas, but we're all wrong in some areas. That doesn't mean that I can't appreciate their wisdom or their heart.

Got any more to add to the list? I really do enjoy quotes. I also enjoy wisdom sayings from other cultures - very interesting to see the ones that are the same underneath but different wording.

Seeing, contrary to popular wisdom, isn't believing. It's where belief stops, because it isn't needed any more.

Gods don't like people not doing much work. People who aren't busy all the time might start to think.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

It could not be happening because this sort of thing did not happen. Any contradictory evidence could be safely ignored.

Give a man a fire and he's warm for the day. But set fire to him and he's warm for the rest of his life.

God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of his own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players, to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time.

That seems to point up a significant difference between Europeans and Americans. A European says: "I can't understand this, what's wrong with me?" An American says: "I can't understand this, what's wrong with him?"

Always be wary of any helpful item that weighs less than its operating manual.

I'll be more enthusiastic about encouraging thinking outside the box when there's evidence of any thinking going on inside it.

A marriage is always made up of two people who are prepared to swear that only the other one snores.

"I meant," said Ipslore bitterly, "what is there in this world that truly makes living worthwhile?"
Death thought about it.
"Cats," he said eventually. "Cats are nice."
I see as much misery outta them movin' to justify theirselves as them that set out to do harm.

That's pretty good, but, I like this one better (probably because it's more disturbing):
Never argue with a fool. They'll drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

(I have no idea who said that)

Ant

I just felt compelled to clarify the atheist's position...

If there were no gods, there would be no atheists.

Subtle, but important difference.
