ATHEISTS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

Postby NH Baritone » Sun Nov 23, 2008 12:45 pm

http://www.atheistsforhumanrights.org/

Atheists For Human Rights is proud to be among those people identified by 2008 Nobel Prize winner in Economic Science, Leonid Hurwicz, as "interveners" in society -- those who behave ethically simply because it is the right thing to do. Our unique Moral High Ground project stands uncompromisingly in support of the victims of inhumane religious doctrines. We find no "gray area" that justifies the harm done to women, gays, children, the hopelessly ill, and human progress by dogma-based laws and policies.

Atheists For Human Rights welcomes you to join us! Membership is open to all who reject supernatural beliefs and support the principles and policies of this organization. We thrive on new ideas and welcome everyone who shares our goals. We have a long history of atheist activism, both as founders and charter members of freethought groups. We are a member society of Atheist Alliance International (AAI), a national organization for which we provided a decade of leadership during its critical startup years.

We publish a regular newsletter with informative articles and information about our meetings and activities. Call or e-mail today for the current printed version or PDF file. You get three introductory issues free to give you a good idea of what we are all about.

Hey, NH, did you know about this effort:

http://www.soulforce.org/equalityride

I had never heard of it until I read an article in my newspaper. The riders visited a private, religulous college in my home state, Mississippi. Of course, some of those inbreeds said they had never even seen a homosexual before. They just thought they hadn't. This really sounds like a great idea. Kind of reminds me of the 60's.

I knew about the organization, but didn't know about the "Equality Ride." SoulForce was formed by Mel White, a former speech writer & ghost writer for Jerry Falwell & Pat Robertson. He later came out of the closet and has devoted himself to confronting the homophobia that is promoted by the Christian right.

Nonetheless, SoulForce remains a highly religious organization. He has located the organization's headquarters in the same town as Falwell's Liberty University. Here's a statement that SoulForce put forth as their way to counter religious messages about gay people:
Six Soulforce Beliefs About Myself

1. I am a child of a loving Creator, a daughter or a son of the Soulforce at the center of the universe.*
2. I am loved by my Creator exactly as I am. My sexual orientation is not a sickness to be healed nor a sin to be forgiven. My sexual orientation is a gift from my Creator to be accepted, celebrated, and lived with integrity.
3. I am not an accident. I have a purpose. I was shaped by my Creator to love God and to assist in God's eternal struggle to win justice for all Her children who suffer injustice.
4. I will not discover my purpose nor realize my power (my own soulforce) until I join my Creator in doing justice (making things fair for all.)
5. When I join my Creator in doing justice, my own life will be renewed, empowered, and made more meaningful.
6. In serving others, it is as much my moral obligation to refuse to cooperate with evil as it is to cooperate with good.

While I salute the effort to encourage an open mind toward gay people (particularly with the religious Black & Hispanic communities), the arguments are similar to other religious controversies: They simply use the same irrational thinking to counter superstitious religious stances. Thus, the process used to justify acceptance of gay people is essentially the same process that is used to oppress gay people.

De-Conversion.com

For the most part, contributors to De-Conversion.com believe the teachings of Judaism, Christianity, & Islam, based on the perceptions and myths of a sometimes wandering ancient Middle Eastern tribe, should be viewed critically — as should the holy books of these religions. This blog attempts to critically, but respectfully, address issues with these religious ideologies, especially Christianity. If you are a skeptical, de-converting, or former Christian, you may find these discussions interesting. We also believe that whether or not you believe in God, you should live your life with love, kindness, compassion, mercy and tolerance while trying to make the world a better place. If there is no God, you have lost nothing and will have made a positive impact on those around you.

What's The Harm

This site is designed to make a point about the danger of not thinking critically. Namely that you can easily be injured or killed by neglecting this important skill. They have collected the stories of over 670,000 people who have been injured or killed as a result of someone not thinking critically.

"We do this not to make light of their plight. Quite the opposite. We want to honor their memory and learn from their stories."

Great posts everyone. In the spirit of knowing thine enemy, I recommend the Atheism is Dead blog to see what the other side is up to. A very comprehensive blog of cutting edge socio/evangelical thought that pulls no punches.

Greetings to all here,
First post from me.
I'm very happy and grateful to have found this really excellent podcast and forum, which I was referred to by a writer on Julia Sweeney's forum, another resource from which I've had some fun and learned quite a bit. I highly recommend Ms. Sweeney's "Letting Go of God" one woman theater show, which is available on audio cd and dvd. Amazon has both, and presumably other retailers do, also. It's a very funny, honest, even inspirational story.

And this thread, Atheist Resources, is definitely the best compilation of such information I've seen. Thank you, NH Baritone and other contributors!

Last, also in the spirit of knowing thine opposition, here's a Wiki I came across recently, "How to Persuade an Atheist to Become a Christian" that's worth a look for amusement and edification.

P.S.
I'd like to place a link to this thread in the "Links" section of the Sweeney forum. I presume nobody here would object to that, but if so let me know.

Go for it!

Because some of the linking here can land you mid-thread, here's a good link for the first post.

Thank you, NH B.

I just paged through this thread again and didn't see the Dawkins web site, which is a truly excellent and constantly updated resource. Did I miss it? Either way, here's a link.

Also, while there is a link to the Center for Inquiry, I'd like to add a link for the Point of Inquiry podcast.

POI, and I suspect now, A Christian and an Atheist," are my favorite podcasts.
Both feature calm, respectful, and probing discussion about subjects that anyone reading this will care about.
POI, is an interview program with an excellent host, DJ Grothe. DJ interviews really interesting, articulate, and often very well-known people in every episode. Every single POI program is available for download in the "archives" section of the POI site.
