Sympathies for Wonders Thread

Postby WinstonNoble » Fri Oct 02, 2009 8:33 pm

This thread is for anyone who wants to express their sympathies to Wonders, who was recently let go from his job.

I am new to this forum and I have only recently met wonders (on the boards), but I can tell he is a good honest sincere person and I was truly saddened to hear about his misfortune. I know he has a family and I hate to imagine myself in the same boat, but with this economy, it could happen to any of us.

I just wanted to convey my sympathies and make an honest offer that if there is any way I could help out, please let me know. I'm sure you have other family, but even if you needed a place to stay for a while, my house is open to your family. Of course, I'll have to run that by my wife first. :)

This is the closest thing to prayer that I can do. :-D

I wish you the best of luck in your search for another job.

It is evidently socially impolite to point out hypocrisy when one sees it...

Is this what allows untenable positions to remain tenuously tenable?

Good grief! He just lost a job, not a house, a limb, or a child! Did you ever hear of unemployment benefits? Let the man have retain some dignity. He's in good company, with almost 10% of the US workforce currently looking for employment.

NHB,
I think that was a very Noble gesture of Winston to make.
Unemployment benefits help, but they don't replace a steady income from a real job, and many people have been losing their homes after finding themselves suddenly out of work. Some become so despondent with their financial circumstances that they act out of desperation and families suffer immensely. Just because nearly 10% of Americans have lost jobs doesn't make it any easier for those who did.
Have a heart for Pete's sake, Winston was reaching out with sincere sorrow for Wonders situation and I find that very refreshing.

Best wishes Wonders during this difficult time, my thoughts are with you.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Wonders! That is a very, very difficult thing to go through. We sure wish Psalm 23 talked about going AROUND those difficult valleys instead of through them! But you know who is with us :) My prayers are with you and your family (and btw, did you read my PM?)

I'm not trying to suggest that Wonders is not facing some unexpected challenges. I've been out of work; the search is not easy and the uncertainty provokes anxiety.

But gushing unctuous pity in his direction over a recent job loss shows a lack of perspective, and in several ways, a similar lack of respect. Jeez! Winston offered him living quarters as if the skunks and weasels had already infiltrated Wonders' box-springs and dandelions had sprouted in the living-room carpet.

Is there no gauging of response based on its seriousness? What would you do if he were suddenly widowed and had both to work and be a single parent? Now that, dear people, would be a major, heavy-duty crisis which deserved beaucoup support from all quarters, including this one. But at this moment Wonders has forty-to-fifty paid, newly-liberated hours each week to look for work or get training for a new job. Who among us who is dissatisfied with their current gig would not consider this a blessing and a half?

I give Wonders credit for ingenuity, creativity, and loving community connections. And instead of carping about how bad things are, you could help him more by cultivating a positive, hopeful, self-effective attitude. Typically such an perspective helps unemployed workers maintain the self-discipline, presence of mind, & good cheer needed to win their next job.
