Well that is the question itself, we would be looking at, so if we are “agreeing to disagree” on anything at this point, it would be that we are disagreeing that the Bible has enough consistency to support a model of a single God who is also trustworthy. We would therefore be agreeing that we don’t want to take the time to examine that question in the exhaustive detail required to answer it one way or the other.

Yes, I agree.

OK, then how about this:
2. That we agree to disagree that one can evaluate whether something that has no regard for the rights/personhood/value of oneself can be considered “trustworthy”.

I’m not so sure about that one. Put that way, it almost sounds like we are agreeing instead of disagreeing, but I still think we are disagreeing. I guess I would have to know exactly how you are defining value in light of how I was defining it. I’m talking about the value that the one who is being tested for being trustworthy assigns something or someone. I’m saying that if you value something or someone, you are trustworthy if you consistently respect that value.I think the way you had it before was better, because I think we are really agreeing to disagree that the “rights” are the critical part.

I'm not sure either. However, I think the bolded part may be the relevant question. I would add that if you don't consistently respect that value, then you don't really value that thing/person in the first place. Hence, perhaps a rephrasing of your statement could be "You can only be considered trustworthy if you first value the thing/person who you are being trustworthy toward." That is a necessary, though perhaps not sufficient, condition of trustworthiness.

3. That we agree to disagree that we know in our hearts that these things, when unnecessary, are morally abhorrent?
I think we are back to agreeing on #3 then. We don’t need to agree to disagree here. Whether or not it is necessary is the critical component on whether it is morally acceptable or not. But without any common ground on #1, we can’t evaluate the question of whether or not it is necessary.

Yep, I agree here too.

Thanks!

And thank you.

I might not be online much for the next week. I'm going to the 150th anniversary reenactment of Shiloh - sorta in your neck of the woods. I likely had several Ancestors in that battle, and my appreciation of the struggles of our Ancestors is very significant to me. I don't think the kids have any understanding of the scope and magnitude of events like that - perhaps this will help.

Have a good day-

Awesome! In the spirit of "it's a small world," much of my work this week has centered around Shiloh. I work for a PBS station and we are premiering two new documentaries on it next week. If you get PBS where you are staying, look for the program, SHILOH: THE DEVIL'S OWN DAY.
Also, much of the work that's been keeping me busy lately is that my writing partner and I are composing the scores for several documentaries on the 150th anniversary of the Civil War in Tennessee. Not this one, but we did the last one that aired in February, and are working on the next one that will air in June.

I hope you have a good trip, and be sure to let me know if you get the opportunity to slide up towards Nashville or Franklin any while you are in TN!

That's so cool, yjoeyh! What is the title of the one that aired in February, if you know? (or what was it generally about?)

Joey-

That's all really cool! I've been mentioning many of the events of the civil war on their 150th anniversaries on fb (as the NYTimes disunion has been doing). I'll listen on those PBS programs!

We are now onto the return trip, after seeing the reenactment, visiting the real site, and all that. It was very different to have all the kids along - harder to do the spiritual type stuff, but good to have that connection to the next generation too. We did actually go through Nashville, but it was late at night in a hurry with a carload of cranky kids. Maybe I'll be by sometime otherwise. Have a fun day!

It was called "No Going Back: Women and the War." This one focused specifically on the changing roles, attitudes and values of women (slave women, and property owners left to fend for themselves) before, during and after the war. It was a very eye-opening doc.
It aired on all PBS stations in TN in February and a few other stations around the country are airing it as well. It might end up on the national PBS schedule at some point as well. I'll try to remember to post something if that happens.

Since I'm already doing a 'shameless plug' here's a promo to the doc...

I was also very excited about getting to record Mary Chapin Carpenter's narration via Skype in my studio. I actually got the idea to do it that way after doing our first show with Emery and hearing how good the quality was.

Thanks!

I hope you made it home safe! I was actually out of town this weekend, only getting back last night myself. I'm glad you guys had a good time, and I hope Tennesseans were very hospitable to you. Please be sure to look me up if you ever get back this way!

Not a shameless plug at all - just sharing with internet friends :) There's a lot of musicians here, too.

Was that you on the piano? Nice touch!
